On the “Surface”!

Hi Again!!

Did you know that Microsoft unveiled a new touch-sensitive coffee table-shaped computer?

The computer’s name is “Surface” and it was designed to do away with the traditional mouse and keyboard. The User, uses his/her fingers to operate it.

“Surface” has also been designed to interact with mobile phones placed on its surface.

The “Multi-Touch” feature allows the user to “gesture” with several fingers at once to manipulate data, rather than relying on a mouse and menus.

It has a 30-inch screen, and “Surface” will initially sell for between $5,000 and $10,000.

Microsoft says small groups of people will be able to use each “Surface” machine simultaneously!

They will be first deployed in November in Sheraton hotels, Harrah’s casinos, T-Mobile stores, and numerous restaurants.

For more information about “Surface” go to:

I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and hope to see you back again tomorrow for…T.G.I.F. & U.F.O.’s on…

Congratulations “Condom King”!

Hi All!

A nonprofit family-planning group, founded by Thailand’s “Condom King”, has won the $1 million Gates Award for Global Health in recognition of its work in family planning and AIDS prevention.

Mechai Viravaidya, (the “Condom King”), is extremely popular in his personal leadership in family planning and HIV prevention.

The chief executive officer of the Global Health Council, (Dr. Nils Daulaire), said in a statement, “The world needs more leaders like Mechai, who are willing to tackle taboo subjects like sex and HIV/AIDS directly in order to save lives.”

To get the message out to more people Viravaidya’s group runs the popular Cabbages and Condoms restaurant in central Bangkok. The name of the restaurant refers to his goal of making condoms as common as the leafy vegetable.

The Gates Foundation set up The Population and Community Development Association of Thailand in 1974 to provide family-planning education to women in rural Thailand.

Rollover??

Hi Everyone!

I hope that all of you had a great long week-end!! Nice weather too I hope!! You know with this warmer weather summer is just around the corner and you know what comes with summer…Vacations!!!

Most of us take a vacation and try to “get away” at least for a little while during the summer and some of us take really great “getaway” vacations, you know the type, you have to get on a plane and fly some place exotic, like Hawaii or The Hershey Chocolate Factory or some other place that strikes your fancy!!

But have you ever bought an airline ticket only to see the price fall shortly after buying it? Oh, doesn’t that get you so upset?

Well, not many people realize it, but many airlines will give refunds if they cut the price after you have bought a ticket! Others offer vouchers, or cash, after deducting change fees. In industry jargon, it is called a “Rollover,” and in most cases it only works if you bought the ticket directly from the airline. Normally if you have bought your ticket from a web site nothing can be done unless the price drops in the first 24 hours, then you Might get lucky!

The Rollover policies have been in place for decades, but, until recently, it has been tough for consumers to figure out when their flight’s price has changed.

But now, thanks to Yapta.com and other companies like it you can track fares and know exactly when the price drops. Yapta though does offer a little more than the others, because it tracks specific flights that you are interested in and before you buy you can use it to get an email alert to price changes on any particular trip.

Other companies that are tracking fares use other methods also, some predict whether prices will rise or fall and others use the historical information method.

With fares yo-yo(ing)? out of control these days due to such high fuel prices, ticket sales, expectations of demand and other frustrations, the prices of airline tickets sometimes change several times during any given day!!!!

So if you are planing a vacation trip this summer where you will be flying, or even if you are not but may want to fly somewhere in the future I would suggest you checking out some of these fare tracking websites, you could save $100.00’s by just being an informed traveler! I know I can always think of much better ways to spend my money than just giving it to the already rich airline company!!!

HHHMMM…a few new summer ensembles would be nice!!!

Hi All!

Well it’s Friday!! Looks like we made it to another week-end together! You know how I like to keep it light and fun on Fridays to lead us into the week-end!

I was out and about this week and came across this cute little Idiot Test, pretty simple really and I know that all of My Readers are so smart that they will pass it with flying colors!! So without further ado…

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. Answer questions immediately without taking time to stop and think.

1.} You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

ANSWER: If you overtake the second person, you are second position because you take their place!

2.} If you overtake the last person in a race, then you are in…?

ANSWER: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. You can not overtake the LAST Person!

3.} Arithmetic: Do NOT use paper, pencil or a calculator.

Take 1000 and add 40, Now add another 1000, Now add 30, Add another 1000, Now add 20, Now add another 1000, Now add 10 . What is the total?

ANSWER: Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100!

4.} Mary’s father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

ANSWER: Did you Answer Nunu? Her name is Mary. Read the question again!

BONUS ROUND: A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

ANSWER: He just has to open his mouth and ask…

It’s really very simple…. Unlike you, My Readers, because I know you would Never fall for any such simple questions!!

Well, thats all for me this week! Hope you have a great week-end and hope to see you back again next week for some more…

Parthenogenesis!

Hi Everyone!

Parthenogenesis! How many of you know what that word means Without having to look it up? Well, I will give you a hint! Birds do it, insects do it, reptiles do it, amphibians do it, fishes do it, sharks do it…but mammals do not do it!!

Give up? Self-Impregnate!

Yes, it seems as though we mammals are about the only ones that can not self-impregnate!

But it is such an interesting thing to me, this self-impregnation or asexual reproduction!

I read a story about a shark born in captivity a few years ago, and it was born to one of the 3 females that was in the tank. This seemed strange to the scientists because neither of the 3 females had contact with a male shark for over 3 years! So it was thought that one of these 3 females had stored up the sperm in their bodies for 3 years and then used it when they saw fit!!! Which makes sense…in a way…except sharks can usually only store up the sperm for months and not years and the last contact that they had with a male shark was when they were still immature pups!!

But when the baby shark was given a paternal DNA test, after dying, this possibility was ruled out because…there was no paternal DNA, only maternal!!!!

So obviously then the scientists figured out that a shark can switch from sexual to non-sexual reproduction mode when necessary!!

This can be of obvious benefit when a species is close to extinction, it is a short-term solution to a long-term problem! It represents an an evolutionary strategy to keep the population and species going when all else fails. Genetically, it’s a last resort tactic because it leads to genetic uniformity, and eventually that will catch up with the population and make it less fit. Thus the short-term solution, but at least with this, science has a chance to step in and try to come up with a long-term solution!

Having no paternal DNA is far from perfect though because the baby’s can suffer from reduced genetic diversity, and this genetic diversity makes the animal able to adapt better to threats such as disease and climate change!!

I wonder though…since it seems as though almost every creature on earth can self-reproduce except us, why we were cut out of the loop?? Think someone or something is trying to tell us something!!?? Something to think about!!

Leave no species behind;
Extinction is forever!

Sage’s Unicorn!

(all of a sudden that has a little different meaning for me today)!!

I hope you have a great day and join Uni and I here tomorrow for T.G.I.F. and some more…

So gardeners and non gardeners alike will not be disappointed in seeing just a few of the millions of pictures that have been taken at the show this year!

Immigrants, Wild Life & the Environment!

Hi Again!

Mossy ponds, thick shrouds of beard-like Spanish moss, subtropical foliage, majestic ebony trees, kiskadees, chachalacas, bobcats, lizards, tortoises, ocelots and jaguarundi, both of them endangered species of cats, and the list goes on. These are just some of the natural wonders in the Rio Grande Valley.

Wildlife enthusiasts fear that these wonders will be spoiled by the fences and adjacent roads that the U.S. government plans to erect along the U.S./Mexico border in order to keep out Illegal Immigrants and Smugglers!

Decades have been spent acquiring and preserving 90,000 riverfront acres of Texas scrub and forest and protecting the area’s wildlife. Now it is feared that the hundreds of miles of border fences will undo all of this hard work and kill some land animals by cutting them off from the Rio Grande, the only source of fresh water.

And the wild life and environment is not the only thing that will be spoiled by these fences! Visitors from around the World bring approximately $150 million a year in revenue to this area. With these fences erected the tourism will dwindle to almost nothing.

And Here I Go…Missing Something Again…I Suppose!! Does the United States and it’s lawmakers really think that this is going to keep out Illegal Immigrants? Don’t you think that they are just going to find other ways to “Climb the Fence”, so to speak??

Illegal Immigrants and Coyotes, people who smuggles immigrants to the United States, make it their life’s work to figure out “New and Improved” ways to get to the “Other Side”!!

So, close to $100 million has already been spent creating, restoring and maintaining refuges for these animals and goodness knows how much it is going to cost to build a 700 mile long fence along the U.S./Mexico border and for what? There will still be Illegal Immigrants only now with much less wildlife and environmental beauty!

You know, the border between the U.S. and Mexico is a longer than 700 miles by the way…do you think that someone might come up with the brilliant idea to go 701 miles to cross over into the U.S. Illegally? Hmmmm…I wonder!!??

Well, that’s it for me today! Hope to see you back here tomorrow for some more…

Safety 1st!

Hi All!

I hope all of you had a good week-end and that your week has started out well!

I want to mention that I am sporting the newest Word Press Theme today called Ocean Mist by Ed Merrit, thank you Ed for such a lovely and peaceful theme!

First, to begin this week, an update from last week; The Ashes of Star Treks’, James “Beam me up Scotty” Doohan, Astronaut Gordon Cooper, and 200 others, including the writer of the original “Star Trek” series, that were launched into space two weeks ago and lost Have Been Recovered!!

The metal capsules that the 202 people were sealed in will be mounted on plaques mentioning the space flight and given to the families who provided the ashes.

I don’t know about you but I am very happy to hear that this has had a positive ending!!

And now…

With summer just around the corner we should be reminding ourselves to keep our homes secure during the warmer weather. Doors and windows left open for fresh air can also be an open invitation to a burglar or worse!

Burglars will take any opportunity to gain access into a property and leaving doors and windows open is just inviting them in. It only takes them a couple of seconds to get into a house through an open window or door, take a few things and leave, all while you are out in the garden or even worse, in the next room!

While we can not be expected to keep our homes permanently locked up, especially in the summer, we we can take a bit of extra care. Many burglaries to homes happen because doors and windows have been left insecure.

If you will close any windows or external doors when you leave the room and make sure the house is fully locked up when you leave the house then a lot of burglaries and other crimes can be prevented. An extra couple of minutes care and attention to security can save you money and the safety of you and your family in the long-run.

In addition to this, many insurance companies expect people to take responsibility for their personal possessions. An unlocked door or open window could cause problems when making an insurance claim!

In the long run it always seems to be “better safe than sorry” & you should always be thinking of your Safety 1st!

That’s it for me today, hope to see you back here tomorrow for some more…
