Make Due With What You Have!

I saw an article on the news a few days ago about a zoo located in Gaza City. I was sitting on one side of the room working on the computer and looked over my shoulder to see that the zoo had gotten two new zebras and the children were having a fun time looking at them.

It wasn’t until I actually started listening to the words that I realized that these zebras were not zebras at all but they were in fact donkeys that had been painted by a professional painter made to Look like zebras!

Now I do not know if the children that were viewing them Knew they were zebra donkeys or not but from across the room, Until I actually listened and heard they were Not zebras, they looked pretty convincing to Me and I have seen a few real zebras in my day!

It was very ingenious if you think about it, but in fact the story behind it was a sad one!

It seems that they the zoo did in fact have two zebras in the zoo until they were neglected and died of hunger earlier this year during the Hamas War in Gaza City. When the zookeepers tried to replace the zebras they found that it was just too expensive and came up with the idea that if they bought two cheaper donkeys instead, they could be made to Look like zebras!

I suppose sometimes you just have to make do with what you have!

The zoo also has a few other animals by the way, an aging tigress, a camel and a few monkeys, birds, rabbits and cats. Not quite the type of zoo that I have ever seen, but the children seemed to be happy with what they had.

That’s all for me today and I hope to see you all back again soon for some more good old fashioned…

New Kid On The Block!

A few days ago a red panda cub was shown off to the World for the first time at the Calgary Zoo. She was born on June 4 of this year and is said to be doing very well. She is obviously eating well as she supposedly already has a nice, big tummy!! The public will not be able to view her until the end of the summer.

Zoo keepers are keeping watch over her and her 5 year old mother, Malikha who gave birth to this little ones sister two years ago. Malikha is reportedly a good mother and while she only tolerates her new cub being taken away from her for brief periods of time for the necessary health checks she takes care all of the the rest of her cubs needs such as grooming and making sure that she is returned to her nest box!

When a new red panda is born and raised by it’s mother it is very special because unfortunately the mortality rate for these red panda cubs are as high as 74%! Red pandas reach maturity at about 18 months old.

There are less than 10,000 mature red pandas in the World today and they are classified as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list.

The cub hasn’t a name yet but when she does I am sure that it will be something very fitting for this:

McDonald’s & Burger King eRumors!

It seems as though there are a couple of eRumors going around recently about boycotting McDonald’s and Burger King because they are buying beef from foreign sources.

One of the eRumors states that these companies are buying beef from South America but McDonald’s and Burger King are vehemently denying this stating that they are Not purchasing beef from South America but rather they are conducting a small experiment using less than 1% of their beef and purchasing Lean beef from Australia and New Zealand and furthermore this is nothing new as it has been going on for years and they are not suppose to be the only ones buying foreign beef as most major fast food restaurants such as Taco Bell, Wendy’s and Carl’s Jr. are also using up to 50% imported beef in their restaurants.

One of the eRumors states that McDonald’s has claimed that there is a shortage of beef in the United States and that is why they are purchasing beef from other countries but McDonald’s denies saying this, McDonald’s states that what it said was: that there is a shortage of LEAN beef in the United States.

McDonald’s is the largest buyer of beef in the United States per year with Burger King coming in second and of course any beef purchased and/or served is 100% USDA-approved and inspected.

That’s about it for me today, hope you have a good one and see you back soon for some more good old fashioned…

Will He or Won’t He?

Well it’s that time of year again, the time that many wait for all year. It’s time to find out if winter will be over soon or if we will have another 6 weeks of winter?

Today is Groundhog Day and I want to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Groundhog Day!!

For any of you out there that doesn’t know what Groundhog Day is then I will tell you.

Every year in the United States and Canada on February 2nd many people gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and anxiously await to see if Punxsutawney Phil, the resident groundhog, is going to see fit to make an appearance from where he has been hibernating all winter. When he does pop his cute little head out then they check very carefully to see if he sees his shadow.

If he does see his shadow then that means that there will be 6 more weeks of winter and he will generally turn around and go burrow again for another 6 weeks but if he Doesn’t see his shadow then that means that winter is almost over and it will be an early spring this year!!

As you can see it’s all done very scientifically and that’s what I personally like to see, I like to know for sure if winter is over or if it’s not!!

Here is a link giving you some idea of the festivities each year on this day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania!

Groundhog Day 2005 Celebration

That’s all for me today as I’m off to get my Groundhog Day outfit ready and hopefully when I’m back again next time I will know for sure that winter is over and an early spring is on the way! See you back again soon for some more good old fashioned…

The Bear Whisperer

Charlie Vandergaw, otherwise known as The Bear Whisperer or The Bear Man, has found that he would rather spend his summers with bears than with people; so every summer he goes to his “Bear Haven” to enjoy the wild, unpredictable and very powerful friends that he has made throughout the years.

When ask what he was trying to prove he replies, “nothing”, and when He looks at a bear the only thing that he sees is “pet me”!

For years Charlie was a bear hunter but after one remarkable encounter with a bear years ago he has decided that he’d rather befriend bears than shoot them.

Charlie likes to walk on the “wild side” with his Grizzly and Black Bear friends and even though it is illegal what he is doing, it certainly doesn’t appear that he’s going to stop any time soon!

T.G.I.F. & U.F.O.’s / Making Rover Over!

Now I do not EVER want it to be said that I don’t love my pets! In fact I love all animals, but I suppose after reading this story, that maybe I don’t love my pets enough because there is something that I find very bizarre about this story!

If nothing else I would not keep the hair that I had combed from the carpets for years and years…I not only don’t understand why anyone would do that but where on earth would I put it?? And I also could not wear the same thing over and over again for 12 years either…and that’s only the beginning!

But I suppose that is what makes the world go round…everyone on Earth seems to march to a different drummer!

Making Rover Over!

That’s really it for me this week! Have a great Easter week-end and see you back again on Monday for more…

Pirates of Compassion

That is how the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society likes to see itself. Sea Shepherd was incorporated in the Untied States in 1981 and before that the idea of Sea Shepherd was formed in 1977 in Vancouver BC, Canada. The original mandate was marine mammal protection and conservation with an immediate goal of shutting down illegal whaling and sealing operations, but Sea Shepherd later expanded its mission to include all marine wildlife.

This conversation society is dedicated to investigating violations, enforcing laws and protecting marine wildlife worldwide.

At the moment some of their campaigns include Defending Whales, Galapagos Islands, Longlining and Shark Finning, Seal Hunts and Taiji Dolphins.

They also have an Eco-Crime Watch reward program offering $25,000 for any person or group that can provide the coordinates of the Japanese Whaling Fleet that successfully leads Sea Shepherd to the fleet and there are of course more rewards being offered also.

In this video it shows Sea Shepherd chasing the Japanese Whaling Fleet along the coast of Antarctica for 50 days and 4,000 miles. I must warn you though that the video is quite graphic and may not be suitable for everyone.

Pirates of Compassion

According to the presenter of this video, the one thing worth fighting for on this planet earth is life.

Oh Henry!

Henry could be a blue blood with three hearts for all I know, and if he is, then that would really make him quite common and never a one of a kind sort of guy!

Henry is a lovely little thing for a very different reason. He was discovered a couple of weeks ago in a lobster pot of all places!

I suppose he’s Welsh, since he was discovered in Whales, but I don’t really know for sure about that either!

In fact I don’t really know very much about Henry except that he is suppose to be a one of a kind hexapus!

I suppose there could be a joke made about him like:

When is an octopus not an octopus?

Of course the answer would be…

When he’s a hexapus!

British marine experts claim that he is the worlds first six legged “octopus”!!

After carefully checking him out, the experts believe that he has six legs as a result of a birth defect rather than an accident.

I wonder if Henry realizes he’s missing a couple of things? I also wonder if he was considered to be an Ugly Duckling in the circles that he hung around??

Henry is so unusual that he is to go on display at the Blackpool Sea Life Centre later this month if you care to make the trip over to northwest England and catch an eye full!

You know what I wonder? Since he is the first hexapus ever discovered, did they already have the name hexapus for him in the annals of science or is it a word that they just made up on the spot??

Henry the hexapus

That’s all for me today! Hope to see you back again tomorrow for more…
