The Red Carpet Fashion Show

I suppose unless you live on the Moon or under a rock then you are aware that the 2009 Academy Awards were presented last night.

Many of the Oscars given out were of no great surprise but who watches or goes to this spectacle for the Oscars anyway?

I dare say that many people only watch or attend them to see the fashion show that goes on Before the “main event” and I must say that it certainly was one memorable fashion show indeed!

In case you missed it then here is a slide show of some of the best of the best!

T.G.I.F. & U.F.O.’s / Making Rover Over!

Now I do not EVER want it to be said that I don’t love my pets! In fact I love all animals, but I suppose after reading this story, that maybe I don’t love my pets enough because there is something that I find very bizarre about this story!

If nothing else I would not keep the hair that I had combed from the carpets for years and years…I not only don’t understand why anyone would do that but where on earth would I put it?? And I also could not wear the same thing over and over again for 12 years either…and that’s only the beginning!

But I suppose that is what makes the world go round…everyone on Earth seems to march to a different drummer!

Making Rover Over!

That’s really it for me this week! Have a great Easter week-end and see you back again on Monday for more…

Globes Without Fanfare

Not exactly a Kodak moment but the half hour Golden Globe Awards were awarded last night without the usual fanfare.

The ceremony was stripped of the traditional glamor, no champagne corks popping, no fashion show, no celebrities in the audience rooting for their friends, no celebrity announcers.

Quite the opposite, the Globes were somber and reminded one of a press conference with the nominees in street clothes.

Some of the winners were:

  • Atonement; Best Motion Picture Drama
  • Julie Christie; Best Actress
  • Daniel Day-Lewis; Best Actor
  • Sweeney Todd; Best Musical or Comedy
  • Cate Blanchett; Best Supporting Actress
  • Javier Bardem; Best Supporting Actor
  • Ratatouille; Best Feature Film
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly; Best Foreign Language Film
  • Julian Schnabel; Best Director
  • Guaranteed; Best Original Song
  • Mad Men; Best TV Drama
  • Longford; Best Mini-Series

There were many other awards of course, for the full list of winners go to:

So without much fanfare…that’s it for me today! Hope to see you back again tomorrow for more…

Have a Scary, Spooky, Safe, Great Halloween…Booo!

Halloween is finally here and each year on this night millions of children dress up in costume and take to the streets for a spooky dose of trick or treat fun.

The Children’s Safety Zone is a great site with Many Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters, Parents and Homeowners. Make sure you check it out Before taking/letting your children go/out Trick-or-Treating tonight!

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is an annual celebration, the word Halloween has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from All Hallows Eve which is the day/night before All Hollows Day or All Saints Day. It is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints.

But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

The people that were still alive did not want to be possessed so on the night of October 31 the villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840’s by Irish immigrants fleeing their country’s potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for “soul cakes,” made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul’s passage to heaven.

And the history of the Jack-o-Lantern? Well it probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, there was a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster and to make a long story short! He had tricked the devil so instead of allowing old Jack into Hell the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer!

The Irish originally used turnips as their “Jack’s lanterns”. But when the immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were far more plentiful than turnips. So the Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember!

Some cults have adopted Halloween as their favorite holiday, but the day did not grow out of evil practices but the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans.

Britney & Her Fan!

Jeanne Moos from CNN.com has reported on the “Great Weight Debate” of Britney Spears!

While I do think her performance left something to be desired, (I try to be nice!), and she maybe should not have worn the “clothing” that she wore, (but I heard that she had been up for a few nights partying with the “Big Boys”, so maybe she just got out of bed and came down from her room to do her act!), I do feel somewhat sorry for her with everyone jumping on the how “fat” she is bandwagon!

If it had been anyone else, most of us would have been saying how nice it was that she had such a good figure after having 2 little ones!

But like they say…If you put it out there then you have to expect that people are going to talk…especially if you are in the news as much as Britney has in recent months!

Make Sure that you keep an eye open at about the half way mark for the YouTube Video that was done by the…”disturbed”, to say the least, “Fan”, Chris Crocker, of Britney’s!

I suppose that this fans video standing up for Britney can be considered a good thing and it was nice to finally see Britney’s fan as Everyone on this earth deserves to have ONE Fan, but to tell you the truth about it, I hope she Never becomes Mine!!

Cell Phones Then and Now

My Daddy is coming to visit me for a few weeks this summer and he will be here in a few days. We will, of course be going out and about and making a few little side trips and I needed a new cell phone, just in case we get lost, which I already know we will!

I went out over the week-end and bought a new one, it is just a tiny little thing and that started me thinking of how much bigger my first cell phone was, not so very long ago. Of course that got me thinking about how much bigger they were when cell phones really started to get noticed, so I came home and started looking around on the Internet for the history of cell phones and as the saying goes:

“You’ve come a long way baby”!!

In 1973, Motorola showed off a prototype of the world’s first portable cellular telephone. It was more than a foot long, weighed almost 2 pounds, and cost $3995.00, it became available commercially in 1983. Its battery could provide 1 hour of talk time, and its memory could store 30 phone numbers. It was not until 1984 though that cellular phones were first mass produced for the general public.

People were of course amazed that they could reach into their pockets or purse and call anyone, anywhere in the world.

Of course they was bulky and expensive and most people thought it was going to be just another toy for the “rich and famous”! No one ever thought the the average “Joe” was going to be able to afford one.

Of course no one ever dreamed that their would ever be a potential risk of cancer, brain tumors or any other sort of health problems from such a futuristic gadget either!

Cell phones today are suppose to meet certain radiation safety standard limits set by the Government. But tests recently conducted found that some of the most popular phones can far exceed the government’s radiation standards, depending upon how they are held.

Reports show that government testing guidelines are so vague that a phone can pass the Federal Communications Commission’s requirements when tested in one position and exceed those maximum levels when held in a slightly different position!

In most cases the bone of an adult skull can block most of the radiation that is created from other devices. The problem encountered with cell phones is that we hold them directly next to one of the areas of the head which have the least amount of protection, the ear canal / ear drum. Information On The History Of Cell Phones

But! All that aside, we do not seem to mind the dangers our cell phones can possibly cause us, we only mind when the battery goes down and we can not use them to call, then they pose an even more dangerous health risk…anxiety attack!!

If you would like to see some of the cell phones of the not so distant past you can go to:

That’s all for me today, hope to see you back again tomorrow for some more…

I hope that todays post has brought a bit of beauty into your life and hope to see you back here tomorrow for some more…

A little “snip” here…a little “snip” there!!

Hi All!

Well, the beginning of another week I suppose!!

Before I go on with todays post I would like to wish a Very Special Friend of mine a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, for yesterday! I hope it was the best one yet and wishing you Many More Happy Years!!! I also hope that you have a chance to enjoy today since you are off work and leaving me all alone to fend for myself!!! I Will expect a Full Report Tomorrow though!!!!

And now; I was reading about Myanmar, in Burma, where women not only have to worry about pickpockets when the go out but now also have to worry about hair thieves!!

Women in Myanmar generally have long hair to their waist or knees and most of the time wear it in a ponytail, making it very easy to “snip”. So it seems that people are approaching them and “snipping” their pony tails, many do not notice it until they either see extra hair fall or until they get home!

The people that are stealing the hair have come to be known as “hair traders” because they are taking the hair and selling it on the open market for hair extensions!

Some times the women are approached by traders that ask to buy their hair but it is becoming more common every day for the hair just to be stolen!

The price of hair is increasing every day due to the demand for hair as an export or raw material!

Recently, a viss, (the Burmese measurement for weight, 1.6 kilograms; 3.5 pounds), of hair is worth between $320 and $400! Quite a lot of money for anyone, but especially in Burma!

According to ancient records Myanmar women have had their own hair & dress styles since AD 100. Some of the hair & dress-styles of the earlier period are still in fashion today!

It seems such a shame that these women are suffering having their hair cut & stolen, because hair is very important to Burmese women just as much today as it was ages ago!

Well, that’s it for me today! Hope you all had a great week-end, and will have a great week ahead of you!! Hope to see you tomorrow for some more…
